WHAT IS RENT ABOUT?
It’s a modern version of the opera La Boheme. Set in New York’s East Village, it’s an emotionally stirring story of a community of young artists struggling to live and celebrate life.

WHO'S IN IT?
RENT stars a cast of 15 dynamic professional performers from the Twin Cities, New York and beyond - including Minneapolis indie-rock front man, HARLEY DAVID WOOD as Roger and Twin Cities musical favorite REID HARMSEN as Mark.  COLLEEN SOMERVILLE, who has performed at The Ordway and Guthrie, plays Maureen.  Addional casting is underway - and will be announced January, 2010.

WHAT AWARDS DID IT WIN?
Most notably the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 1996 Tony Award for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. It also won a slew of other awards and has been featured on numerous television shows, magazines and featured in the New York Times and Newsweek.

IS THE SHOW STILL PLAYING ON BROADWAY?
No, it closed on September 7, 2008 after more than 12 years on Broadway. It is the 7th longest running show in Broadway history.

IS THIS THE SAME PRODUCTION THAT ALWAYS RETURNS TO MINNESOTA?
No!  This is an entirely NEW production of RENT that will be playing a sit-down engagement in a completely new theatrical space.  It will feature a fresh, young and dynamic cast of professional Twin Cities actors and Musicians, including local favorites and exciting new talent.

IS IT LOUD?
The songs range from rock ‘n roll to soaring ballads.  The Lab is a warehouse space (formerly The Guthrie Lab) that is an alternative theater space - acoustically fit for the production.  If we have done our job correctly, the rafters will be shaking.

IS RENT APPROPRIATE FOR CHILDREN?
It is a story which addresses adult themes and controversial issues. Parental guidance is suggested. It is not recommended for children under 13.  Stay tuned for a study guide for teens, college students and educators.

ISN'T THIS SHOW WHERE THE AUTHOR/COMPOSER DIED?
Yes, you’re thinking of Jonathan Larson who wrote the music, lyrics and the book. He died unexpectedly of an aortic aneurysm the night before the show’s first performance off-Broadway and ten days before his 36th birthday.
 
IS THERE A CAST RECORDING?
Yes, the original Broadway cast recording is available on Dreamworks Records.  The film version is also available in all retail outlets and online.

HOW LONG IS THE PERFORMANCE?
Two hours 40 minutes, including intermission.

WHERE DO I SIT?  ARE THERE RESERVED SEATS?
RENT at The Lab theater will be an all-together, new experience for Minnesota theatergoers.  The Lab is an innovative theater space with impressive sightlines and comfortable seating.
